For over 30 years, RS&GIS has offered high-quality, applied geospatial workshops to professionals in a variety of industries, including; transportation, engineering, planning, natural resource management, agriculture, healthcare and more. Our workshops vary from Esri-focused software training, including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Experience Builder, to drone deployment and data processing, to special topic courses, such as 3D data processing and wetlands interpretation from remotely-sensed imagery.

If you want a more intimate training experience, we can come to your offices and teach any of our classes, or a custom course, in person. This is a great option if your organization needs to train multiple people. All you need are PCs and a reliable internet connection for your trainees. We take care of the rest.

Introduction to ArcGIS Pro for MDOT

This one-day course was designed specifically for Michigan Department of Transportation employees. Through conceptual overview and hands-on exercises, participants are introduced to spatial concepts, ArcGIS Pro functionality, tabular data & spatial queries, symbology, map-making and more. No prior experience is required. While this class is open to the general public, preference will be given to MDOT employees. This class is online and self-paced, but instructors will be available Monday - Thursday (8:30 am - 4:30 pm) the week of the scheduled offering to answer any questions and offer assistance via online meeting and screenshare.

ArcGIS Pro II for MDOT

Schedule: March 3 - March 7 | May 5 - May 9 | August 4 - August 8 | December 8 - December 12

This one-day workshop is a follow-up to Introduction to ArcGIS Pro for MDOT and was designed specifically for Michigan Department of Transportation employees. This workshop moves beyond the basics and focuses on geodatabase creation, geo-processing, vector editing, linear referencing systems and ArcGIS Online. While there is no prerequisite for this workshop, it is recommended that participants first take the Introduction to ArcGIS Pro for MDOT course or have commensurate knowledge. While this class is open to the general public, preference will be given to MDOT employees. This class is online and self-paced, but instructors will be available Monday - Thursday (8:30 am - 4:30 pm) the week of the scheduled offering to answer any questions and offer assistance via online meeting and screenshare.

Mapping with Drones

Schedule: May 7 | August 6

This focused, hands-on workshop is appropriate for participants interested in using drones as a mapping platform. Topics include planning and executing drone missions, converting drone imagery into products useful for mapping and analysis, data display, and secondary geospatial processing and analysis. Participants will learn how to plan and execute drone missions, properly process both natural-color and multi-spectral digital photos using Pix4D, view resultant data products such as image mosaics and 3D surface models in mapping programs, perform volumetric analysis, and generate vegetation indices. A demonstration using open-source software and a quick visit to the field will be included as well. There is no required prerequisite for this workshop, however it is assumed that you are already capable of flying drones. This class is taught in-person.

Introduction to ArcGIS Pro

This workshop is the sequel to our popular two-day Introduction to ArcGIS course that was taught for 20+ years. This course introduces participants to the complex capabilities of ArcGIS Pro software, the standard Esri desktop GIS client. Through conceptual overview and hands-on exercises, participants will learn how to perform powerful queries, generate symbology, perform geospatial analysis and build and share maps. Discussions regarding software navigation, data formats & types and locating geospatial data are included as well. This workshop is appropriate for newcomers to both GIS and the ArcGIS Pro software itself. There is no prerequisite for this workshop. Online offerings of this class are self-paced, but instructors will be available Monday - Thursday (8:30 am - 4:30 pm) the week of the scheduled offering to answer any questions and offer assistance via online meeting and screenshare.

Introduction to Experience Builder

Are you ready to move on from Web AppBuilder or template-driven web mapping applications? This is the second workshop in our professional Web GIS curriculum and will introduce you to Experience Builder, the most current Esri Web GIS development environment. Experience Builder is a quantum leap forward and allows creators to build highly-customized web mapping applications that were previously possible only through programming. This workshop will introduce you to the main components of Experience Builder and lead you through the process of creating and sharing customized web mapping applications. You will learn how to add, customize and stylize components and content, connect to and filter data, create both 2D maps and 3D scenes and more. This one-day workshop is recommended for anyone interested in moving beyond existing templates and creating a custom geospatial experience. This class is online and self-paced, but instructors will be available Monday - Thursday (8:30 am - 4:30 pm) the week of the scheduled offering to answer any questions and offer assistance via online meeting and screenshare. No software needed since all software and data is hosted on MSU virtual computers and the RS&GIS organizational AGOL account. All you need is a computer with a fast internet connection. It is recommended that participants either complete the first course in our web GIS curriculum, Pro-ficient Web GIS, or already have a working knowledge of web GIS.

Pro-ficient Web GIS

Schedule: April 14 - April 17 | May 12 - May 15 | August 18 - August 21 | October 13 - October 16

This is the first workshop in our professional Web GIS curriculum and will start you on the path to creating engaging web mapping applications using ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online. This workshop will lead you through the process of configuring data in ArcGIS Pro, sharing data to ArcGIS Online, building web maps and then authoring web mapping applications using ArcGIS Instant Apps and other Esri templates. This one-day workshop is appropriate for anyone who wants to break free from desktop GIS alone, however it is recommended that participants have a basic working knowledge of ArcGIS Pro. This class is online and self-paced, but instructors will be available Monday - Thursday (8:30 am - 4:30 pm) the week of the scheduled offering to answer any questions and offer assistance via online meeting and screenshare. No software needed since all software and data is hosted on MSU virtual computers and the RS&GIS organizational AGOL account. All you need is a computer with a fast internet connection.

Advancing with Experience Builder

Schedule: November 17 - November 20

Now that you have a working knowledge of Experience Builder, it's time to dig into all the tools Experience Builder has to offer. This course will dive into advanced functionality and customization options and lead you through the process of creating highly-customized, aesthetically-pleasing web mapping applications that offer users an immersive experience. Additionally, participants will learn the process of embedding web experiences into a Hub/Site to give users a one-stop shop for data, maps and more. This one-day workshop is recommended for anyone interested in honing their web GIS skills. It is recommended that participants either complete the second course in our web GIS curriculum, Introduction to Experience Builder, or already have a good working knowledge of Experience Builder. This workshop is offered as a semi-synchronous, self-paced online class with instructors available on-demand. Instructors will provide guidance and help through demonstrations and online screenshare sessions. No software is needed since all software and data is hosted on MSU virtual computers and the RS&GIS organizational AGOL account. All you need is a computer with a fast internet connection.

The department of Geography certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will develop your geographic awareness and geospatial technology skills, and expand career opportunities. These courses and associated certificate are ideal for: (1) professionals currently working in fields that use geospatial technologies and pursuing training opportunities, (2) professionals and post-baccalaureates looking to advance or revamp their current career path, (3) teachers pursuing continuing education hours, and (4) international students seeking an educational experience and certification from an American university. You do not need to be an MSU student or alumnus to take our professional courses.

RS&GIS reserves the right to cancel workshops due to low enrollment. Participants will be notified of scheduling changes two weeks prior to the workshop start date.

In the event of cancellation, participants my reschedule for the next offering or receive a refund.

Workshop participants may cancel registration for full reimbursement up to two weeks prior to the workshop start date for a full refund. Rescheduling will be allowed in most circumstances without incurring a fee.
