The RS&GIS Content Editor Suite (CES) is a modern solution to the “no code” Content Management Systems (CMS) issue. Most CMS platforms proudly broadcast that no coding is necessary to build a website on their platform. These no- or low-code solutions seem appealing as they allow people unfamiliar with coding to design aesthetically-pleasing websites. The problem with this approach is that any customization beyond standard functionality offered by the CMS requires a developer regardless. However, the developer is constrained because the core code is not exposed and cannot, therefore, be edited. This prevents best-practice development, which may complicate maintenance and further customization. The RS&GIS CES flips this idea on its head and gives power to both the content editors and the developers to allow for more customized solutions. While it also does not require coding by post-development editors, it remains highly customizable.
We have been working with the MSU Department of Geography to build a system to keep track of their certificates, courses, and students. This system allows them to grow the system as they have more and more courses with full database management capabilities while also providing reporting and analytics based on student's grades, enrollment, and other measurements.
Initially built for the MSU Department of Surgery, we developed a system to allow users to request time off in an organized and direct way. Users fill out a quick form to give information about their time off and reviewers can approve or deny the request. This system also sends out email when a request is made, reminders for reviewers, and a calendar invite for the requestor.

NextJS is an open-source, full stack web framework, and has been advancing the web development world for almost a decade and is only gaining popularity. Websites for The Washington Post, Nike, Spotify, LG, Twitch, Hulu, AT&T, Doordash, Nvidia, and many more are all powered by NextJS. Here at RS&GIS we mainly choose to develop in NextJS. This ensures that RS&GIS can provide a functional, modern, and adaptable website, while also providing flexibility to our clients. This framework provides the power to implement best practices and the flexibility to develop in-depth, custom tooling.
Read moreReactJS is a JavaScript library that helps build user interfaces for web and mobile apps. It's known for being fast, scalable, and efficient. NextJS builds on top of ReactJS and provides more tools for developers. We here at RS&GIS are well versed in the ReactJS and NextJS ecosystem. Most of the websites you visit today are built with ReactJS in some form or another, including this one!
Flask is a lightweight Web Server Gateway Interface (WSGI) web application framework. It is designed to make getting started quick and easy, with the ability to scale up to complex applications. Here at RS&GIS we use Flask to create microservices that can be used by other applications. For example, if you have data coming in from multiple sources, we can use Flask to create a microservice that can be used by other applications to process that data and output it in a single normalized format or even many different formats if needed.
In today's age, teams need to focus on whatever it is they do best. Most groups turn to Content Management Systems (CMS) to help them manage their websites. Here at RS&GIS, we have experience with Cascade, WordPress, and other CMSs. We can help in this regard! With our background in web development, we can even do some interesting things that you normally wouldn't see in a CMS. We also highly recommend that you use our CMS, as it would allow all the power you are used to in a CMS but allows us to make the website more efficient and easier to manage for you.
